Advanced Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) Modeling

Objective of the course
This is an intensive advanced extension of the intermediate CGE course. The course is intended to equip participants with skills of developing Dynamic CGE models. The participants are trained through a step-by-step hands-on approach in the development of the Dynamic CGE Models and customizing them to individual economies. In this course, we introduce dynamic equations and also skills of importing large Social Accounting Matrices (SAMs) into GAMs as well as customizing them to the Dynamic CGE model. The prospective participants for this course are advised to first graduate from the intermediate CGE course before enrolling for the Dynamic Course. However, prospective participants with earlier exposure to Static CGE modeling are also eligible for this course. The course is open to policy makers, academicians, researchers and analysts who intend to develop their career in advanced economy-wide modeling. The details of the course, include;

  • Solvers in GAMs for CGE models (MINOS, PATHNLP,  CONOPT and PATH)
  • Hands-on step by step construction of large open economy Dynamic CGE
  • Importing SAMs from Excel to CGE model using GAMs codes
  • Policy simulation in a Dynamic CGE model
  • Customizing a Dynamic CGE model to a particular economy
  • Interpretation of results and reporting formats

Mode of delivery
The hands-on approach is used to deliver the Dynamic CGE course. This is an intense programme thus requires that participants attend all the training sessions organized. Missing any of the steps, jeopardizes progress with the remaining steps. The participants will be teamed up in groups so as to benefit from synergetic cohesions. The participants are expected to come with their individual laptop and mouse. At the end of the course, each team is expected to make a presentation on the policy results generated.  For the online option, each participant is expected to submit answers to assignments on time to allow the course end within the specified period as extension could come with facilitation costs.
